Two years ago, half the cameras we fitted in Indore carried a Chinese badge. Today none of them do.

The change was not gradual. On 1 April 2026, MeitY’s Essential Requirements mandate took full effect and non-compliant internet-connected cameras stopped being legal to sell as new stock. Chinese brands, including Hikvision and Dahua, largely failed to clear it.

So the question is no longer whether to buy Indian. It is which Indian brand suits your site, and how to verify the specific model before you pay.

Why This Changed, and What Actually Got Mandated

Worth being precise here, because two different certifications get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.

BIS ER-01 registration is the licence to sell a camera in the Indian market. The model is tested in a BIS-recognised lab against IS 13252 (Part 1) safety requirements plus the ER:01 security requirements, and it receives a registration number.

STQC certification goes deeper, with system-level and attack-based testing, and requires annual surveillance audits. Government, PSU and GeM procurement demands it.

Both test the same six Essential Requirements MeitY published in 2024: no default passwords, encrypted streams, signed firmware, disabled debug ports, supply-chain transparency, and a published vulnerability disclosure policy.

Manufacturers also have to declare the country of origin of the System-on-Chip, and certification has been refused to products using Chinese-origin chipsets. That single rule is what pushed the market, not the paperwork burden.

The Five Indian Brands, Compared

Prices move with model, sale periods and project quantity. Treat them as bands, not quotes.

CP Plus: Widest Availability

Owned by Aditya Infotech, CP Plus is the brand most Indian buyers already recognise. The range runs from 2MP domes for shops to 8MP AI models for commercial sites, with matching DVRs and NVRs.

The practical advantage is not specification, it is supply. You can find CP Plus stock and a technician who knows it in almost any Indian city, Indore and Pithampur included. When a camera fails in year three, that matters more than a spec sheet.

Prama: The Widest Certified Range

Prama holds 58 STQC-certified models, the highest count of any single brand on the STQC portal. For commercial buyers who need one vendor to cover bullet, dome, PTZ and AI categories with certification on all of them, nothing else comes close yet.

One thing to understand clearly, because your competitors will not tell you. Prama is Hikvision’s Indian joint venture, operating as Prama Hikvision India Private Limited. The certified cameras are sold under the Prama brand, not the Hikvision brand, and Hikvision-branded products do not appear on the STQC portal.

So a dealer telling you “Hikvision is certified in India” is being loose with the truth. Prama is certified. Hikvision is not. If you are buying for a defence-adjacent or security-sensitive site, ask about the JV structure and decide with full information rather than finding out later.

Entry point is around ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 for a basic IP dome. There is no ₹1,500 home camera in the range.

Best for: factories, hospitals, government tenders, large campuses.

Sparsh: Non-Chinese at Chip Level

Manufactured by Samriddhi Automation in Haridwar, Sparsh was among the earliest Indian brands to clear certification. It uses Ambarella chipsets from the United States, which gives it one of the cleanest documented supply chains of any Indian option.

The range covers fixed dome, bullet, box, PTZ and wedge formats, with PoE and audio input or output on most models. That suits offices, retail chains and factories where a procurement team has to document component origin rather than just tick a compliance box.

Best for: buyers where supply-chain transparency is a written requirement.

Matrix Comsec: One Vendor, Three Systems

Matrix is better known for EPABX and intercom systems than for cameras. Their SATATYA series brings the same enterprise approach to surveillance, with 8MP motorised varifocal bullets, vandal-resistant domes and ruggedised industrial models.

The reason to choose Matrix is consolidation. If you want cameras, access control and telephony from one manufacturer with one support channel, that is a real operational saving on a large campus. For a four-camera shop it is irrelevant.

Best for: IT offices, corporate campuses, Pithampur factories wanting a single vendor.

HiFocus: AI and Solar

HiFocus positions itself as the feature-led Indian brand. Person and vehicle detection, colour night vision across the range, enterprise VMS, and solar-powered 4G cameras for sites with neither mains power nor wired internet.

That last combination is the genuinely useful one. Highway stretches, remote factory boundaries, under-construction sites and rural installations were previously awkward and expensive to cover. Solar plus 4G makes them straightforward.

Best for: AI analytics, remote sites, boundary coverage without infrastructure.

Five Mistakes to Avoid

1. Assuming a brand is certified because it is Indian. Certification is granted model by model. Get the registration number for the exact model you are buying and check it before paying.

2. Buying on price alone within a brand. The cheapest CP Plus camera and the best CP Plus camera share nothing but the logo. Confirm resolution, night vision distance and IP rating.

3. Trusting a dealer who says a Chinese brand is now certified. Ask which entity holds the certificate and under what brand name. The answer is often a joint venture, not the parent.

4. Mixing brands across cameras and recorder. Cameras work best with their own brand’s NVR or DVR. Cross-brand setups work until a firmware update breaks something.

5. Ignoring local service. An Indian brand with no technician in your city is no better than an imported one. Check service presence before committing to a five-year system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which certification do I actually need, BIS ER-01 or STQC?

BIS ER-01 is the requirement for legal sale in the Indian market, so it is what private buyers should verify. STQC is required for government, PSU and GeM procurement, and involves deeper system-level testing with annual audits. Both test the same six MeitY Essential Requirements.

Is Prama the same as Hikvision?

Ask the seller for the BIS registration number for that exact model, then check it on the BIS portal, and confirm the packaging carries the Standard Mark. For government work, ask for the STQC certificate number and verify it on the STQC portal instead.

So the choice comes down to what you actually need. If availability and service matter most, CP Plus is the safe answer.
